Historic England commissioned this report to identify historic architectural measures that can demonstrate and support England’s historic buildings in adapting to the changing climate. The purpose of this report is to investigate how passive architectural measures, such as awnings or shutters, have been used in the past to reduce solar gain and seasonal overheating. The research is not limited to shading devices but also considers both historic and contemporary passive architectural measures. This research will enable Historic England to suggest possible options for passive architectural measures which may help reduce the risk of overheating to owners and managers of historic buildings in response to the changing climate.
