Making heritage home renovation easier : integrated support for homeowners in Estonia

The challenge
Historic buildings are an important part of our
cultural environment, but they often have low
energy performance and high heating costs.
As Europe aims to reduce energy use and
emissions from buildings, heritage homes
must be preserved while also adapted for
modern living. Renovating them is complex
and often overwhelming for homeowners,
who face fragmented information, unclear
guidance and difficult decisions.
The context
In Estonia, many heritage homes are privately
owned, which makes homeowners key actors
in achieving both energy efficiency and
her itage conservation goals. However,
support systems appear fragmented and
difficult to navigate, often adding to the
confusion instead of relieving it.
Project goal: Making heritage homes
comfortable, energy efficient, and fit
for the future.
The solution
Within the LIFE heritageHOME project, a
digital one-stop-shop has been developed.
This integrated, user-friendly renovation
support system that brings together
information, guidance, tools and services into
one place, is established to simplify navigating
the renovation process for homeowners.
The goal
To make heritage home renovation easier,
more efficient and more accessible — while
preserving the historical value of buildings. By
supporting homeowners with clear guidance
and practical tools, the project enables better
decision-making, more consistent processes
and higher-quality renovation outcomes.
